All About Metairie
Located in Jefferson Parish, Metairie is part of the New Orleans metropolitan area. While not as well-known as New Orleans, Metairie is a unique community in its own right. With a population of more than 138,000, this unincorporated area is the largest community in the Parish.
The History
The area now known as Metairie was first settled by the French in the 1720’s. The name is a French word referring to a small tenant farm. The area was inhabited by such farmers who were sharecroppers and continued that way until the early 1900’s. Native Americans also made this area their home until it began to be developed.
During the 1940’s, Metairie grew because the land was cheaper than in other areas and taxes were lower. Lots were also larger than in other parishes, most significantly the Orleans Parish. In the 1970’s and 1980’s, businesses moved to Metairie to open nightclubs, restaurants, and bars and created a vibrant nightlife, which became known as Fat City.
