Why Louisiana Has The Best Fishing
The Louisiana coast has some of the most exciting, most diverse, and most rewarding fishing in the world with over 3,000 miles of shores and millions of acres of marsh. Fishing is a popular sport in Louisiana because every season offers a new variety of fish to catch. All along Louisiana’s Gulf Coast, in places like Delacroix, you can catch many different fish from speckled trout and redfish to bass and flounder just in one spot along the marsh.
The state also has some of the most generous catch limits over any other place in American. In states like Virginia and Florida daily catch limits for speckled trout are only about five per angler. Louisiana on the other hand is very different with its daily limit is 25 speckled trout per angler. It’s not just speckled trout either; Louisiana’s generous creel limits extend to white trout, redfish, flounder, and black drum.
There are also many different ways of fishing in the South as well. Kayak fishing has become more popular on Louisiana’s Northshore since plenty of places now offer fishing poles with kayak rentals. Shoreline fishing is another very popular type of fishing that can be done in just about any place in Louisiana, as long as you have fishing poles! Lastly, fishing from a boat in the marshlands is more common the further south you go, and you can also reach various types of waterways as well. Freshwater, saltwater, and brackish can all be found in Southern Louisiana, and each waterway offers different types of fish, and some, even crawfish!
Fishing in the Gulf of Mexico
The Gulf of Mexico is an 810 nautical mile wide body of water created 300 million years ago from the earth’s tectonic plates moving. The body of water in relation to the USA is commonly referred to as the “Third Coast”. An important body of water for many factors, petroleum is heavily reliant on the Gulf of Mexico as is makes up one-sixth of the United States’ total production.
The four major industries in the Gulf of Mexico are fishing, shipping, tourism, and oil. In a 2007 study, these four industries accounted for $234 Billion worth of economic activity. The Gulf of Mexico and surrounding waters saw approximately 24 million recreational fishing trips where around 190 million were caught. With migratory birds crossing the Gulf of Mexico every year, hunting is another recreational activity that is done surrounding the gulf every year.
